The Sacrament

Sealed with the Holy Spirit

Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation, completing the grace of Baptism and strengthening the bond with the Church. In Confirmation, the candidate receives the Gift of the Holy Spirit — wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — to live as a disciple of Christ.

At the Parish of Our Lady of the Way, our Confirmation program is designed for young people in Year 9 and above. Over several months, candidates journey together through prayer, learning, service, and reflection — preparing their hearts to receive this beautiful sacrament.

The Role of a Sponsor

A sponsor is a confirmed, practising Catholic who walks alongside the candidate throughout their preparation. They offer prayer, guidance, and encouragement — and present the candidate to the bishop at the Confirmation Mass.

A sponsor cannot be the candidate's parent. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, or parishioners are all wonderful choices. The sponsor should be someone the candidate admires and feels comfortable talking to about faith.
